The Free Lock Grip System for cyclists and motorcyclists will be available in the United Kingdom and Ireland from December 2025. To make this possible, Stel Orthopedics has entered into a partnership with COVVI Ltd in the UK.
This company is the inventor and manufacturer of the COVVI hand, a highly advanced bionic prosthetic hand. And now, the company's catalog is expanding with the Free Lock Grip System for cyclists and motorcyclists. With this, COVVI Ltd becomes the exclusive distributor for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Wilfred Mijnheer of Stel Orthopedie began developing the Free Lock system more than thirty years ago. Through the "Motorcycle Mobility for the Disabled" project group, he offered motorcyclists with disabilities the opportunity to ride (again). The development of the Free Lock system has since helped hundreds of motorcyclists regain the freedom to ride their motorcycles through this project.
Besides motorcycling, the Free Lock system is also widely used by cyclists today. At all levels, from city cyclists to Paralympic champions, the Free Lock system offers people with disabilities the opportunity to cycle safely. Whether it's grocery shopping on a city bike, climbing and descending mountain trails on a mountain bike, or road cycling, it's all possible with the Free Lock Grip System.
Over the past thirty years, the Free Lock system has undergone significant development, particularly in terms of practicality and the aesthetics of the orthopedic device. However, the mechanical foundation of the system has remained the same throughout these years: a reliable and safe system that has proven itself for more than three decades!
The Free Lock system has been regularly shipped to countries within the Benelux and Europe for several years now, and sometimes even far beyond. And now the United Kingdom and Ireland have been added to the countries where the Free Lock system is available. The area where a Free Lock system can put a big smile on a user's face is getting bigger and bigger!
"We are very proud that our Free Lock gripping system is now available for cyclists and motorcyclists in the UK and ROI. Together with COVVI, we are taking a wonderful step in the more than thirty-year development of the Free Lock gripping system.
And we hope that many prosthetic and orthotic users in the UK and ROI will be able to experience joy and freedom while cycling and motorcycling."

COVVI was founded in 2017 by a passionate team with prior experience in prosthetic engineering and design. They performed considerable research and development to investigate the key areas of opportunities for upper limb prostheses, utilising market feedback, as well as establishing new relationships with an assortment of industry professionals throughout the product supply chain. The team travelled the world to meet so many amazing people in the industry who helped them considerably by providing a unique insight they could not discover alone.
In 2019 COVVI launched their first prototype which was used for beta testing and since then, they have helped hundreds of people to feel empowered and confident with their COVVI hand, ultimately helping them get their life back.
